Hmmm ok thanks man. I got the roots from a health food(ie: hippy) store yesterday. Can’t wait to try it out. Ill use the yeast method and see if the alchohol is noticable. :)

@PersonguydudeWB I have never tried the actual roots, there are lots of available brands out there I’m still trying. Incidentally if you are concerned about alcohol content, according to studies using this recipe it is minuscule.

Ever tried making root beer with the actual dried roots? (ie: hops, pikenard root, yellow dock root, burdock root, sassafras, sarspailla etc.) My brother loves root beer, and I want to make something really special for his birthday. Unfortunately ill have to sacrifice flavor by using dry ice instead of yeast to carbonate the root beer because he is 12.

@havensa7fold I have never tried Orange, but why not, give it a try, let me know how it goes. You’re only out a cup of sugar really if it doesn’t work. Remember to put a tablespoon of yeast, and use cool water to fill the bottle. If the flavor is weak add more extract. You can google “Zatarain’s Root Beer Extract” to find where to buy it. Thanks for the comment.

I can’t find root beer extract where I live. If I used McCormics Orange Extract instead of root beer extract, could I make orange soda??

I don’t know for sure if you can store it in a cool dark place. When you refrigerate it that kills the yeast to stop it. So it would seem that you could after that. Not sure though. You could try it putting the bottle in a plastic garbage bag and test to see. We drink it too fast to do that…

Great Video. I remember drinking homemade root beer when I was very young and my grandparents house.

So my question is and I have heard you can store this in a cool dark place.

I wonder how long? I have also heard if you use Ale Yeast it won’t break the bottles cause the pressure will kill the yeast.

I mean I would hate to have a 2-liter bottle go off in my basement ala dry-ice bomb but it would be cool to have about 25-50 bottles put up for “food-storage”.

I don’t know for sure, I’ve only done it with the 2 liter bottles. I would make sure you have good bakers yeast, use cool water, and the sugar 1 cup. The yeast needs the sugar. I think I would make it up in a 2 liter bottle and make sure everything dissolves completely maybe wait overnight then mix and pour into the smaller bottles.

I don’t usually have much yeast floating, but the little that does I generally turn the bottle over a few times and let it mix in. So I guess I could say–I just drink it. Enjoy!!

  16. survivalexpert93 30. Jun, 2010 at 10:40 am #

Do you drink the yeast that is floating around, or do you filter it out.
