    great, thanks!

  4. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 3:59 am #

@wksun The oranges eventually get very soft. So once I removed the mead from the jug I inverted it and worked them all out.

  5. wksun 16. Jul, 2010 at 4:52 am #

Did you just invert the carboy and shake it until you could grab part of the orange slice and pull it out or did you have a tool to do it? I’m considering doing this as my next batch!

  6. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 5:22 am #

@wksun Good point, It was a pain!

  7. wksun 16. Jul, 2010 at 6:20 am #

got a question for ya, once you’re done fermenting, how did you get those oranges out? Must have been a pain!

Haha hopefully, its just a little 1-gallon pilot project with Lalvin EC-1118. The rhubarb flavour is mostly acidic, so i’m curious as to what flavour it will impart besides some extra sourness.. At any rate, it’s given it a great colour!

  9. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 6:33 am #

@gavinplaysbass Oh my! I absolutely love rhubarb. I bet you it will be terrific!

I’m making a rhubarb one right now.

I usually add the fruit at the time of mixing the initial batch of mead. You can add at any time and keep in for only a week or two if you want to avoid risk of spoilage. Or you can use a chemical called pectic enzyme which will treat the fruit so it doesn’t spoil.

When do you add fruits during fermentation or after? I’m afraid if it dosn’t ferment fast enough my fruits will spoil and get moldy any tips?

I will be sure to tell you how it turns out any advice on where to get cheap hunny?

  17. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 10:49 am #

Licorice root would probably make an excellent mead. If you do it let me know how it comes out.

  18. whirly22 16. Jul, 2010 at 10:57 am #

Ya im thinking about trying again with brewing. I have an idea to use licorice root as a flavoring. Ganna try and grow my own licorice if I have enough time

  19. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 11:42 am #

Thanks, I used a premium maple syrup out of the bottle. Good point about the preservatives. No more maple mead for me.

  20. whirly22 16. Jul, 2010 at 11:55 am #

maple syrup in mead never works I tried this and if failed hard ruined 5 gallons. Did you use natural syrup or syrup out of a bottle? I used it out of a bottle and i think the preservatives killed the yeast

  21. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 12:41 pm #

It came out terrrible! I am not sure why but the maple mead was a disaster. Not going to try this again.

  22. kareninthesun 16. Jul, 2010 at 1:01 pm #

Thank you for the quick/easy info on using gallon jugs in place of the carboy, but want to remind those whom are trying this for the first time to PLEASE remember to keep a strong eye on the fermating process when using fresh fruit such as blueberries. Using balloons in place of airlocks works, but those tiny little pinholes get clogged. I don’t know if larger balloons are the answer or not, but started this type about 24 hrs ago and poked about eight holes in the balloon. Not deflated, so ok?

  24. mgfurst 16. Jul, 2010 at 1:34 pm #

Yes, i can i will do it on thursday or friday and thanks for your time.

  25. epicfantasy 16. Jul, 2010 at 2:08 pm #

No, it is probably fine. It has finished its ferment and now it is aging. Is it possible for you to take a specific gravity reading?
