incredible! great information about what Orchid Hill is doing in their vineyards to make great wines. . . the rose bush info is fascinating. I had heard of people planting crab apple trees at the end of rows, but that is for totally different reasons!

video vic looks and sounds like he has grafted some serious bud over his lifetime….he’s got a little plot of his own over the hill which is going green too….whats that all about!

That’s a really interesting tidbit about why some vineyard plant rosebushes at the end of the rows

Video Vic! I love the informal but informational format. Its cool to learn about what makes great vineyards great, in a manner that doesn’t whiz right over my novice head.

Was the background song totally necessary? I mean, the vocals were rather annoying…so unless it was an original song….vid would have been better with just a jazzy instrumental. That’s all I’m saying. But good info, thx.

@mechreports1 spend the 0.75 to get a packet of yeast dude, we arent in jail.

@coshyno I have been keeping mine in a closet and it doesn’t smell, but once you take the balloon off the “sugar wine” it sometimes stinks pretty bad.

i saw a video where the guy went real cheap and used brown bread in water to get the yeast

  17. haansgruber 28. Jun, 2010 at 3:02 am #

@4234josh Also powdered priming sugars (used specifically for brewing) are better than granulated table sugar as they are more fermentable. It is also important to heat the brew to a boil to sterilize, remove germs and impurities prior to fermentation. Take a specific gravity reading prior to adding yeast, then when the fermentation air lock has stopped bubbling after (1 week?) take a specific gravity reading again to determine approximate alcohol content

    peace :)

@4234josh you can use orange juice, etc., the yeast consumes fermentable sugars turning them into c02 (carbon dioxide, or carbonation) and alcohol. Certain sugars are more fermentable than others. They bend light in different directions, scientific study if you’re interested. There are only two types of yeast (I think)

one jailhouse brewer (O.J., cup of sugar and baking yeast) claims about 30% in his orange juice concoction made on the TV show Lock Up Raw

    peace :)

As accurate as this video may or may not be (I’m not sure because I haven’t tried it yet), it would be a lot more legit if your spelling was not that of a 10 year old.

  20. free2astroboy 28. Jun, 2010 at 5:16 am #

@4234josh As instructed, yes, it’s ok. I don’t know why this part is important, but you have to refrigerate it as it said so,..distilling? Google that instead. (I used Gatorade, and I got messed up!)

@coshyno No,… the baloon will catch all gasses,…

Stupid little fuckers like you don’t know what the fuck you are doing. It’s obvious by this video.

  23. 4234josh 28. Jun, 2010 at 6:54 am #

so after its done fermenting its ok to come into touch with air? and how do you distill..??

@haansgruber or anyone do you know if the non grapejuice drink has more achohol? and does the wine taste alright?

  26. free2astroboy 28. Jun, 2010 at 9:01 am #

My last input was negative,…my first attempt was awful, and apple concentrate turns out shitty, but i tried Gatorade on the last attempt, and I’m hungover typing this. I’m going to make two more batches right now!

  29. haansgruber 28. Jun, 2010 at 10:34 am #

The fermentation lock or airlock is used in beer brewing and wine making which allows carbon dioxide released by the beer to escape the fermenter, while not allowing air to enter the fermenter, thus avoiding oxidation. The reason for sterilization in the brewing process is to kill germs wild yeast which can be present in the air. They can cause problems in the yeast as well as create off flavors in the finished product.

    hope this helps

    peace :)
